Understanding each other

Emotional Translation

Rewrite something you want to say so it can be heard instead of defended against.

  • About 6 minutes
  • Free
  • No account needed

You write the sentence as it currently exists in your head. The tool helps you separate the observation from the accusation, name the need underneath it, and offer a version that is still honest but easier to receive.

Read this first

Softer wording does not make an unreasonable request reasonable, and it is not a technique for managing someone.

AI generation is not configured on this deployment, so this tool cannot run here. The rest of the page explains what it does and how it is meant to be used.

How it works

Most sentences carry two things at once

There is what happened, and there is what you have concluded it means about the other person. The second one is usually the reason the conversation goes nowhere — not because the conclusion is wrong, but because it is the part that has to be defended against before anything else can be discussed.

It pulls the observation out of the verdict

“You never listen” is doing two jobs. Somewhere underneath it is a thing that happened on a particular evening. On top of it is the word “never”, which turns an evening into a character assessment. The tool names both parts without telling you off for the second one.

It offers a reading of the need

Underneath most accusations is something plainer: to be finished with a sentence before it is answered, to matter on a Tuesday as much as on a birthday, to raise something without it becoming an event. One possible reading, offered as one.

Then two or three versions, not one

A single suggestion reads as the correct answer, and there is no correct answer to how you talk to someone you live with. A short set reads as what it is: options, in different registers, for you to pick from and then change.

Questions

What this is not

Will a softer version get me what I want?
Not necessarily, and the tool will not pretend otherwise. Phrasing changes how likely something is to be heard. It does not change whether the thing you are asking for is reasonable, and if it is not, the output will say so rather than help you disguise it.
Is this a way of handling my partner?
No, and if that is what you are looking for, this is the wrong page. It works on your own sentence and nothing else. It will not suggest timing, leverage, or anything you could describe as a technique for managing another person.
Does it tell me what my partner is like?
It cannot and it will not. It has one sentence of yours and no access to them. Anything it says about their side is clearly marked as a guess made from one account.
Is anything saved?
No. There is no account, nothing is written to a database, and the result lives on the page until you close it. If you want to keep a version, copy it before you leave.

Between Us is a reflection tool, not therapy and not a clinical service. If what you are dealing with involves fear of your partner, threats, or being controlled, please use these resources rather than this page.
